Chelsea enter talks to bring their Paris Saint-Germain conqueror to Stamford Bridge this summer according to respected journalist.
Chelsea have entered talks to sign Paris Saint-Germain forward Ezequiel Lavezzi after the Argentina international forward’s goalscoring display against them in the first leg of the two team’s UEFA Champions League quarter final at the Parc des Princes.
Lavezzi fired PSG into the lead after less than three minutes had passed, controlling a poor attempted header clear by John Terry and lashing an unstoppable half volley into the roof of the net, and delivered a dangerous free kick from wide on the left that David Luiz could only turn into his own net.
That prompted Blues boss Jose Mourinho to praise Lavezzi, and castigate the finishing of his own strikers.
“At the first goal the ball goes to [Ezequiel] Lavezzi and he controls the half-volley and ‘boom’. Top player. Top striker,” concluded Mourinho to the Guardian, who also labelled his team’s defending a “joke”.
“I’m not happy with my strikers’ performances,” he added when asked why he deployed winger Andre Schurrle up front.
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claims that Lavezzi’s agents have recently been in talks with Chelsea, with the west London club having failed to sign him on loan in January.
However, while he has an impressive scoring record against Chelsea, having found the back of the net against the Blues for both Napoli and PSG, Lavezzi is very much a patchy player who scores in patches.
He has only scored seven times in 25 Ligue 1 games this season, which does not compare particularly favourably to Jose Mourinho’s current centre forwards Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba.
Eto’o is the top scoring of the trio with eight goals in 19 Premier League games, while Torres has four strikes in 23 matches to his name and Ba three in 15 appearances.
Romelu Lukaku has spent the whole season on loan at Everton, performing well, but looks likely to leave Stamford Bridge this summer after his agent revealed he was already speaking to Tottenham about a transfer.
While Lavezzi would certainly be a useful squad player for Chelsea to have, Jose Mourinho will almost certainly be on the lookout for a top level striker this summer to solve his side’s long term problem up front.
