Blues negotiating deal for in-demand centre-back.
Chelsea are in talks to try and sign AS Roma defender Mehdi Benatia ahead of rivals Manchester United, according to the Daily Express.
The Blues want to strengthen at the back this summer after agreeing to sell David Luiz to Paris Saint-Germain, and Benatia has now become Jose Mourinho;s top target in that position, despite the Portuguese coach insisting he would not be making any more signings.
The Moroccan international was one of the best defensive players in Europe last season, proving to be rock-solid at the back for Roma as they finished second in Serie A and with the best goals-against record in the Italian top flight.
United may have now switched their focus to Sporting Lisbon defender Marcos Rojo after struggling to sign Benatia.
