In what could be the final nail in the coffin of Fernando Torres’s Chelsea career, his manager Jose Mourinho has ‘forgotten’ the striker even exists, the Guardian reports.
In an interview with French television station Canal Plus, the Portuguese boss claimed that he only has one striker to work with at Stamford Bridge…
“The problem at Chelsea is that we are missing a striker. I only have one in Samuel Eto’o but he is 32, possibly 35, who knows?”, said the maverick boss.
The quotes undeniably suggest that Mourinho flatly doesn’t rate Torres, who will soon turn 30. Despite arriving for a British record £50m transfer fee in 2011, the Spaniard has only notched 19 Premier League goals in 101 appearances.
It’s pretty clear that Mourinho sees no future for Torres at Stamford Bridge, if he refuses to even acknowledge his existence behind Eto’o, whose contract expires in the summer anyway.
Any player would be hurt by the comments, so it seems strange that Mourinho would want to dishearten one of his players when his club are set to compete for both domestic and European honours in the final months of the season.
What they will do to Torres’s mindset is debatable, but it’s becoming abundantly clear that he will leave at the end of the season.
