Chelsea beat Manchester City 0-1 at the Etihad stadium last night, but manager Jose Mourinho has played down his team’s title chances with a farcical equine metaphor…
The Blues sit level on points with City now in 2nd place, two points off leaders Arsenal, but the Portuguese boss considers his side big under ‘dogs’ compared to the other title chasers.
“There are two big horses and a little horse,” Mourinho said after the crucial win, as reported by the Daily Mail.
“A horse that next season can race,” the manager continued, much to the amusement of the listening journalists.
“We can win it if they lose it. Arsenal are working for many, many years for the evolution of their team.
“We are there, but are not favourites. We are preparing the team to be one of the favourites next season and this is a very important step.”
Not even the most ardent Chelsea fan will be able to agree with Mourinho’s comments that Chelsea are title outsiders. In the summer they brought £33m Willian, £21m Andre Schurrle and Samuel Eto’o, and further strengthened their squad this January with £22m Serbian Nemanja Matic, £11m winger Mohamed Salah, and French wonderkid Kurt Zouma who will join in the summer.
Chelsea are a footballing superpower right now, with 27 players out on loan to various clubs around Europe. The current squad is one of the most expensively assembled in world football, but yet Mourinho still reckons there are no expectations on his team to do well this season.
While his comments are clearly an effort to take pressure of his players, the nonsensical ‘little horse’ comparison is not going to fool anyone.
As his team showed last night though, his media tactics might just be working…
