Chelsea’s Brazilian centre-back David Luiz is closing in on a mammoth £50m transfer to PSG, which will make him the world’s most expensive ever defender, and it appears that Jose Mourinho has chosen the player he wants to replace him with.
The Blues boss has earmarked Real Madrid prodigy Raphael Varane as a potential signing, after enjoying working with the French international during his own tenure at the Bernabeu.
Varane is still only 21-years-old, and is rated by many as the most talented young central defender on the planet.
He’s 6 ft. 3″, which aids his excellent aerial ability, but he’s also extremely composed in possession of the football. This helps him carry the ball out from the back, from where he usually plays it simply into his midfielders. Varane started Real Madrid’s Champions League victory at the weekend, and he’s also part of Didier Deschamps’ France World Cup squad.
If Varane was to move to Stamford Bridge, he’d have some difficulty getting into the side because of the already excellent partnership of John Terry and Gary Cahill that Mourinho deploys at the back.
They finished last Premier League season with the best defensive record in the top flight, which was one of the main reasons David Luiz found it so difficult to get into the side.
With John Terry ageing though, Varane could well be the long-term replacement for the club captain. The Blues have also brought in the talented Kurt Zouma, and it’s feasible that both of the French prodigies could eventually step up and form a partnership at the back in coming seasons.
Varane has made 71 appearances for Los Blancos, and won five caps for France so far.
