Euro 2016 hosts France were always destined for an easy ride on Thursday night – after all they had opted to play Armenia in what was a fairly pointless friendly in Paris. Nevertheless, a 4-0 win can never be sniffed at.
Karim Benzema bagged a brace, Antoine Griezmann fired home too, but Yohan Cabaye scored the goal of the game.
All three of France’s goalscorers are – barring any unforeseen fitness problems – dead certs to be in France’s squad for next summer’s European Championship.
That is not all they have in common. The trio are also linked by the fact they were all heavily credited with interest from Arsenal earlier this year.
Benzema – seen by many as the missing piece in Arsene Wenger’s jigsaw – was odds-on to join the Gunners in August, but all the talk led to nothing as the striker stayed with Real Madrid.
Midfielder Cabaye was linked with the Gunners back when he was a Newcastle United player. He left the Magpies to join PSG in January 2014, but that did not stop the rumours.
Arsenal continued to be touted as ideal suitors for Cabaye, until he left the Ligue 1 champions to move to Crystal Palace in July this year.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid wing wizard Griezmann was reportedly on Arsenal’s radar in June, but his £43.5m asking price was seemingly too high for the Gunners.
