Gunners in fight to sign defensive target.
Manchester United will reportedly block any move for Arsenal to sign Chris Smalling this January as Louis van Gaal hopes to keep the player, according to the Daily Star.
The England international has recently emerged as a surprise £10m target for the Gunners as they look to strengthen defensively, but they look set to be unsuccessful in their efforts to sign him.
Arsenal did raid United for the £16m purchase of Danny Welbeck over the summer, and had been keen to try their luck with a move for Smalling this winter.
Still, despite some unconvincing form this season, the versatile defensive player looks set to remain at Old Trafford for the time being.
