Arsene Wenger will make Matthias Ginter his second signing of the summer…
Arsenal will complete a £6.1m deal to sign Freiburg’s 19-year-old German defensive midfielder Matthias Ginter this week, reports The Metro.
Ginter is comfortable at either centre-half or in a midfield anchor role, and looks set to join French free-transfer Yaya Sanogo at the Emirates this summer.
The German is comfortable in possession, and can play the ball out from midfield using short passes rather than playing longer balls, which would suit Wenger’s fluid style of football. His quick reactions and reading of the game help him intercept opposition passes regularly, but his tackling is a weakness, which could be exposed in the Premier League at his young age.
Ginter has been highly rated ever since he became Freiburg’s youngest ever goalscorer in the Bundesliga, and is a regular in Germany’s Under-21 side. He would compete with the likes of Per Mertesacker, Lorient Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen for a starting centre-back position, and would expect to gain experience in Arsenal’s Under-21 side early on.
His performances for the German Under-21s were outstanding in the European Championships earlier this summer, where they narrowly lost to Spain in the semi-finals. It appears that he did enough to earn the move to North London, although Gunners fans will hope more proven quality is brought in before the end of the window.
