Arsenal’s attempt to bring in competition for goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has led them to the surprising figure of Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, report the Metro, with the Spaniard expected to leave Anfield this summer.
The report suggests that the Gunners are preparing a £5 million bid for Reina, who has just returned to Merseyside following a season long loan with Serie A side Napoli.
The Naples side are believed to be unlikely to make a serious move to sign Reina permanently, however, with the fee that would be expected by Liverpool coupled with his significant wage demands putting him out of their price range.
Despite Polish international Szczesny having established himself as the undisputed first choice at the Emirates Stadium, Wenger appears to be keen to secure new competition having lost reserve stopper Lukasz Fabianski to Swansea City.
Reina spent a significant period as first choice goalkeeper at Anfield under the management of Napoli manager Rafael Benitez, but Brendan Rodgers opted to freshen up his ‘keeping options after just one season with Reina.
Rodgers moved to secure the signature of Belgian international for Simon Mignolet from Sunderland, a player who has gone on to make the number one shirt his own over the past twelve months.
