Ashley Williams admits he would be very tempted with a move to the Champions League club…
Swansea’s Welsh centre-half Ashley Williams has admitted to being interested in joining Arsenal, reports the Metro.
The Gunners lost 3-1 against Aston Villa yesterday in the opening game of the Premier League season, with Christian Benteke bagging a brace. Fans continually chanted at the board to spend some money, after seeing their side fail to bring in any big name signing all summer.
Laurent Koscielny also go sent off in what was a completely miserable afternoon for the home side at the Emirates, and will sit out the next game suspended. Thomas Vermaelen’s inconsistent form means French boss Arsene Wenger wants to strengthen the centre of defence.
The Welsh skipper is flattered by the Champions League side’s interest.
“It’s very flattering but you take it with a pinch of salt because you see a lot written and you never know what to make of it,” said the 28-year-old.
“I just take it as a compliment. You must be doing something right, whether it’s true or not.
“All players with any ambition want to see how high they can get, whether that’s with their team – which has been the case with me at Swansea – or whatever really,” he added.
“If I sat here and said I didn’t want to play in the Champions League, that’d be a lie. But I’d never disrespect a team I play for and say, ‘that’s it, I’m desperate to leave’, just after a story in the paper. I’d never do that or think that.”
Williams performed brilliantly last term with Swansea, who won the League Cup under Danish boss Michael Laudrup. The player is comfortable on the ball, but his physicality also suits the Premier League. If he were to join, he would join Welsh compatriot Aaron Ramsey at the London club.
