The Gunners may have cooled their interest in the Uruguayan.
One of the biggest transfer stories of the summer was Arsenal’s chase of Liverpool star Luis Suarez and the club were expected to continue their pursuit in January.
The Gunners had a £40m plus one pound bid for the Uruguay international rejected by the Reds, but now Arsene Wenger says the side don’t need Suarez with Olivier Giroud in such good form.
“I’m not focused on that now [signing Suarez], what is important for me is that Giroud has proven since the start of the season that he’s an exceptional striker,” the 64-year-old told the club’s website.
“They have different styles, [they are] different styles of players. Giroud is a real centre forward who uses that space well, uses his power and is really central.
“Suarez is more a player who goes on the flanks, who comes deep into midfield and is more of a dribbler.”
Giroud has netted eight goals in 15 matches for the north London club this season, including five in the Premier League – helping Wenger’s men to the top of the table currently.
Yet Suarez has been in even more sparkling form, scoring six times in just four ties in the English top tier and the South American looks as if the 10-match ban didn’t affect the attacker at all.
Although fans at the Emirates Stadium may like Wenger’s confidence and loyalty to the players, the fact that only Nicklas Bendtner and Yaya Sanogo are available as backup to Giroud is a worrying thought.
