Ancelotti quips that it’s Los Blancos that have handed the Gunners their success.
It’s been a brilliant season for Arsenal so far in 2013/14 and Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti says this is down to the Spaniards selling Mesut Ozil.
The Italian joked that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had to buy the 54-year-old dinner after Los Blancos allowed the Germany international to leave for the Emirates Stadium.
“Arsenal are doing well, but we helped them of course,” Ancelotti was quoted by Marca.
“Arsène Wenger has to buy us dinner, as we gave them Özil!”
Although the Madrid manager is clearly joking there is some truth in Ancelotti’s words as Ozil certainly has brought confidence to north London.
The 25-year-old may be suffering a slight blip in form of late, but the attacking midfielder has inspired some great performances from the club and possesses genuine world-class ability.
It was clear that selling Ozil was an unpopular choice with many at the Santiago Bernabeu, not least Cristiano Ronaldo who had benefited greatly from the German’s vision when it came to assists.
However, with Los Merengues desperate to bring Gareth Bale to the Spanish capital from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, something had to give financially.
By receiving £42.4m for Ozil it greatly helped sanction the world record £85.3 transfer of Bale and Wenger was able to welcome the first high profile signing at the Emirates in a long time.
In fact the arrival of the midfielder is one of the biggest scoops ever to have occurred in the Premier League and even neutral fans are glad to see the star playing in England.
