The Red Devils have’t given up on bringing back the talented forward.
Ever since Cristiano Ronaldo made the then world record £80m switch to Real Madrid from Manchester United the forward has been linked with a return.
However, after the 28-year-old signed a bumper new deal at the Santiago Bernabeu the rumours appeared to subside, although now United are planning on a bid after the 2014 World Cup, according to the Daily Mail.
It’s said that the reason the Red Devils’ transfer dealings this summer were so disappointing – the £27.5m signing of Marouane Fellaini and youngster Guillermo Varela were the only new arrivals – was because the Premier League champions thought they could re-sign Ronaldo.
The Portuguese ace was spotted having dinner with the player’s advisors and the United hierarchy back in the summer, with the meeting passed off as a friendly occasion for old time’s sake.
Yet the club’s owners the Glazers are no fools in the world of business and know that bringing Ronaldo back to Old Trafford would be a commercial success guaranteed; not to mention the world-class ability the attacker possesses on the pitch.
When Gareth Bale made the £85.3m switch to Madrid it was thought that the door was open for the Portugal captain to depart, although Arsenal’s purchase of Mesut Ozil for £42.4m helped ease Los Merengues’ financial outlay.
New United boss David Moyes has had an indifferent start to the Scot’s tenure at the Theatre of Dreams and would love a marquee signing to ease that pressure, with the 50-year-old open about the admiration of Ronaldo.
“Everyone at Manchester United would tell you he [Ronaldo] is the best in the business,” Moyes was quoted by the Mail.
“I have not been fortunate enough to work with him but there is still a hope some day it might be possible.”
