Reina set to be latest Spaniard to join Benitez in Naples.
Napoli are on the verge of securing a season-long loan deal for Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina according to reports in Italy.
The 31-year-old has spent the last eight years at Anfield, but with the club recently securing the signing of Simon Mignolet, it is believed that the stopper is more than tempted by the possibility of a fresh start in Serie A.
It would see the two Spaniards reunited after their successful spell together on Merseyside before Benitez’s departure, and it is understood that Reina will travel to Naples in the next 24 hours to undergo a medical and complete his move according to Sky Sports.
The Italian giants had been expected to seal a deal for QPR ‘keeper Julio Cesar prior to their interest in Reina, however the Brazilian’s wage demands appear to have scuppered any chance of a move which has now led the Partenopei to switch their attention elsewhere.
With Morgan De Sanctis on his way to Roma, Benitez has made finding a new number one a priority this summer, and he will be delighted to not only bring in a player he is familiar with and has proven to be one of the most reliable players in the Premier League over the past few years, but also to add another compatriot to his talented squad.
Having already clinched deals for Jose Callejon and Raul Albiol, the Spanish influence is set to continue as the club look to challenge Juventus for the Scudetto next season, while also competing in Europe.
