Arsenal’s weekend defeat against rivals Manchester United in the Premier League only served to highlight the Gunners’ lack of stability at the back and the gaping hole that exists in the centre of their midfield.
Manager Arsene Wenger seems to have acknowledged this and is widely expected to bring in a defensive midfielder in the new year – but which of the eight stars that the Gunners have been linked to should he go for? We rank them in order of their suitability for Arsenal’s needs:
8) Asier Illarramendi (Real Madrid)
Illarramendi would cost far more than his potential contribution is worth – an excellent deep-lying playmaker, no doubt, but would be overwhelmed as a Premier League holding midfielder.
