Attacker had been expected to leave the Red Devils this summer.
New Manchester United manager David Moyes is determined to keep hold of unsettled front man Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford next season, according to reports in the Guardian.
The England international’s future at the Premier League champions is still very much open to debate after the player had asked previous United boss Sir Alex Ferguson for a transfer away from the north west last month.
However, with Ferguson having now left his role at United after 26 years at the helm, there is a belief at the club that the 27-year-old could be persuaded to see out the remaining two years on his current deal with the Red Devils, especially given the fact that the forward’s new coach is his one-time mentor from Goodison Park.
Rooney has enjoyed a mixed bag of a season at United, still managing to hit the back of the net in the top flight on 12 occasions in just 26 contests, while overall the attacker has scored an impressive 16 goals in 36 outings for the Premier League giants.
