Ray Rice’s problems have brought light to the fact that there have been many high-profile NFL players who have had problems with the law and with public perception in the history of the league. In almost any industry there are bound to be bad eggs, but in a league like the NFL where athletes become celebrities if they perform well enough and a league that prides itself on having role models for children, it appears that there is no limit to which some players will go to do horrible things.
This is a list that counts down some of the greatest players in NFL history to be arrested, tried, and/or convicted of major felonies or drug charges. The ranking is based on a combination of the high-profile of the player with the nature of the crime – in other words, a decent player who committed a horrible crime might not be ranked as high as a super high-profile guy who plead to some lesser crimes.

10. Rae Carruth – A former 1st-round draft pick by the Carolina Panthers, Caruth led all NFL rookies in receiving yards in 1997. However, in 1999 Carruth hired a hitman to murder his pregnant girlfriend. He was convicted in 2001 of consipracy to commit first degree murder as well as other related charges and was sentenced to 18-24 years in prison. He will be eligible for release in 2018.
