Tottenham Hotspur are becoming increasingly resigned to losing Luka Modric to Chelsea, with the Blues readying a further bid to test chairman Daniel Levy’s resolve.
“I don’t like talking about players from other clubs, but that’s something we’ll look at during this week,” said Blues chief executive Ron Gourlay just a few days ago.
However, Harry Redknapp reportedly has a plan to improve Spurs.
Tottenham reportedly intend to bid for Mladen Petric of Hamburger SV – a Croatia international colleague of Modric.
Like Carlos Tevez or Wayne Rooney, he is a tireless runner up front, and appears perfectly suited to the Premier League.
He scored 11 goals in 22 league games for Hamburg last season, but contract talks have stalled while he mulls over his future.
“We have talked in a very relaxed atmosphere and shared our ideas,” said Petric.
“But I want to take this very important decision about the further course of my career, in peace and without any pressure.”
Although Spurs have signed Brad Friedel this summer to give Heurelho Gomes competition in goal, in an emergency they could do worse than deploy Petric.
After Basel goalkeeper Franco Costanzo was sent off in a UEFA Cup match against French side Nancy, Petric faced the resultant penalty – as the team had already used all their substitutions.
