Tottenham Hotspur are considering offering former Manchester United enforcer Owen Hargreaves a contract after their prospective move for West Ham United midfielder Scott Parker hit the blocks.
A disagreement with West Ham over the structure of the deal for Parker has lessened the chances of it completing before the transfer window is closed, and with Wilson Palacios likely to move to Stoke, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is in the market for a midfield spoiler.
Though the window shuts tomorrow evening, Tottenham have until Friday to submit their Premier League squad, and because Hargreaves is currently without a club he can be signed any time up until then.
However, Manchester City are also being strongly linked to a stunning late swoop, and Redknapp will have to move fast if he is to secure his signature.
Hargreaves has worked extremely hard on his fitness recently and believes he is ready to prove himself ready for first team football again.
“I’m going to blow people away,” Hargreaves told the Daily Mail.
“I’m coming back believing I can return to the level I was at before. My body feels great and my knees are perfect. I’ve just got this huge chip on my shoulder because I’ve been out for three years and people think I’m dead and buried.
“I don’t want to get ahead of myself. I’d like to get some proper football training and a few games under my belt before I get too excited.
“But, right now, I’d like to think I can play 40 games this season and with the right care I believe I can train every day.
“I hope to be back in the England side for the European Championship next summer. You have to have ambition.”
