The very best defenders on the planet…
Centre-backs are often unheralded in world football – due to the easy headlines that more creative players produce.
Here’s our homage to the top five centre-backs in world football right now…
5) Mats Hummels – Borussia Dortmund
Bayern Munich are kicking themselves for letting Hummels go in 2009. Hummels, like all top-class modern centre-backs, is technically sound, and is comfortable with the ball at his feet. The giant centre-half will no doubt start for Germany for years to come.
4) Gerard Pique – Barcelona
Pique would be higher on this list if it wasn’t for the demolition Bayern Munich handed out to Barcelona last season. The 26-year-old has been a cornerstone of the Catalan side ever since his return to the club from Manchester United in 2008.
3) Sergio Ramos – Real Madrid
Pique’s Spanish defensive partner Ramos, has already amassed 109 caps for Spain at only 27-years-old. The Spaniard is a ferocious centre-half, and is equally adept at right-back due to his technical ability. Will no doubt go down as one of the game’s greats.
2) Vincent Kompany – Manchester City
The Manchester City and Belgium captain has it all. Strong, unbeatable in the air, and comfortable with the ball at his feet. At just £6m Kompany has to go down as one of City’s greatest ever signings.
1) Thiago Silva – PSG
Thiago Silva, is quite simply; a brilliant footballer. Worth every penny of the £35m PSG paid AC Milan for him, Brazil’s captain is a remarkably composed performer. The 27-year-old will hope to lead Brazil to World Cup glory next summer.
