Deal could involve a trade between Anthony and Griffin.
The New York Knicks have reportedly discussed the possibility of trading Carmelo Anthony to the Los Angeles Clippers for Blake Griffin, according to league sources.
As reported by ESPN, it is understood that the Clippers management have also had internal discussions about such a deal but the two franchises have not yet discussed the situation with one another.
Neither are certain that a deal could be made, but that hasn’t prevented speculation suggesting that the possibility is open.
However, it appears to be the Clippers who are perhaps the more apprehensive of the two teams due to Griffin’s impressive season thus far.
The explosive power forward has averaged 26 points and nearly 11 rebounds in his last 10 games, and it is expected that he will be retained as he continues to flourish and improve his game under the watchful eye of coach Doc Rivers.
Meanwhile, the Knicks are still confident that they can sign Anthony to a new long-term deal this summer, despite the fact that he looks set to test free agency.
New York are struggling this season and Anthony has failed to give them assurances that he will definitely stay beyond the end of the year.
As a result, the US media have suggested that the Clippers, the Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Bulls are all viable destinations.
While the Clippers are most limited in terms of salary cap space, they would have to sacrifice depth in order to put together their own “Big Three” if they were to keep Griffin.
In contrast, the Lakers have plenty of space this summer and are expected to trade Pau Gasol in order to free up some more room. Meanwhile, the Bulls are supposedly an attractive option for Anthony too, but it is unlikely that there will be answer over his future until the end of the season.
