Newcastle United made a late bid to sign Mali striker Modibo Maiga from Ligue 1 team Sochaux, claim French radio station RMC Sports.
However, it appears that their £8m bid was not enough to prise the 23 year-old away from the French club, and their quest to sign a striker continues.
That is despite Mike Ashley promising that the £35m received from the sale of Andy Carroll would be re-invested into the playing squad – and Alan Pardew promising two new players in the last week of the transfer window.
Rumours of moves for Bryan Ruiz, Andre-Pierre Gignac and Manchester United forward Federico Macheda never came to fruition, and now Newcastle must hope to get to January in a decent position to try again.
Whether or not they will approach Sochaux again for Maiga remains unclear.
