Newcastle United are to bid for Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan, according to local paper the Evening Chronicle.
The 22 year-old flyer has found first team opportunities difficult to come by since moving to Old Trafford in 2009, and with two years remaining on his contract is reportedly considering moving on.
With Ashley Young adding to the competition on the flanks alongside Nani, Antonio Valencia, Park Ji-Sung and Ryan Giggs at Old Trafford, it is clear to see why Obertan is looking elsewhere.
St James’ Park is fast becoming a haven for French players, and Obertan would fit in well in theory.
Sylvain Marveaux, Mehdi Abeid, Yohan Cabaye, and Demba Ba have been signed by Alan Pardew this summer, and all are native French speakers.
Gabriel Obertan cost Manchester United £3m two years ago, and his price is unlikely to have inflated due to his fleeting appearance record.
Perhaps Obertan could finally make his mark in English football – albeit at a different club to the one he first signed for.
