Newcastle have made an eleventh hour bid to bring Bryan Ruiz to St James Park despite the player being on the verge of joining Fulham.
The Costa Rica international is currently in London finalising terms on a move to Craven Cottage but his current employers, FC Twente, have confirmed that the Magpies have matched the Cottagers £10.6m bid which the Dutch club have accepted.
They are also prepared to improve on the terms being offered by Fulham as they aim to steal in ahead of their Premier League rivals. The club have got a helicopter at the ready to bring the striker to Tyneside to expedite the process aand now it is up to the 26-year-old to decide where he wants to play his football.
