Manchester United are in talks with Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton over a surprise free transfer, according to the Daily Mail.
Arsenal and Liverpool have also been linked with the philosophy quoting footballer, but it appears Sir Alex Ferguson has won the race for Barton’s signature.
However, with Newcastle boss Alan Pardew now adopting a similarly hard line approach to Twitter to his Man Utd counterpart Ferguson, Barton would certainly have to curb his social network activity.
Barton would be unlikely to be impressed by the Mail’s suggestion that he would be bought as a squad player after a prominent first team role at St James’ Park.
He also played a lot of his football for Newcastle on the right flank – where Manchester United can already pick from Antonio Valencia, Nani and Ashley Young.
Barton would more likely play in central midfield for the Red Devils, but on the evening of Paul Scholes’ testimonial, is he the replacement Manchester United fans had in mind?
