Manchester United have earmarked a potential summer move for Southampton pair Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana, reports talkSPORT.
The two Englishman are enjoying exceptional seasons with Mauricio Pochettino’s side, and have both won their first caps for England as a result. 25-year-old Lallana has three England caps to his name, and has a virtually guaranteed a spot on the plane to the Word Cup. Teenage prodigy Shaw earned his first appearance for the Three Lions in February, and is in a straight shoot out with Chelsea veteran for the second left-back spot for the World Cup.
£50m though for two players yet to play football at Champions League level seems astronomical, however.
But United badly need to improve both the central midfielder position and the left-back berth, where Lallana and Shaw respectively play.
David Moyes has the technically inept Marouane Fellaini, the much criticised Tom Cleverley, 40-year-old Ryan Giggs, and the often impressive if pretty immobile Michael Carrick as his central midfield options. Lallana would add creativity, pace, versatility and excitement to the side, although it’s yet to be seen whether he’ll be able to make the massive step up in terms of surroundings and expectations.
Similarly, the left-back problem must be solved. Patrice Evra’s contract runs out in the summer, while current backup Alex Buttner has not proved he’s at an elite level. Shaw is only 18-years-old, but already has the physical and technical ability to start for a top-half Premier League side. He’s strong, quick, works tirelessly up the left flank, and provides a dangerous delivery with his left foot.
If they’re to capture both though, they’ll have to beat off stiff competition from a number of rival suitors. Liverpool and Chelsea both want the midfielder, while the same sides are interested in securing Shaw, as well.
