Chelsea starlet Patrick van Aanholt hopes to emulate the success Tom Cleverley enjoyed at Wigan Athletic on loan last season.
The young Dutch defender, who has moved to the DW Stadium himself for the season, believes that a good season with the Latics could help him establish himself under Andre Villas Boas at Chelsea.
“I want to try and emulate what Tom Cleverley did here last season,” said van Aanholt, who spent part of last season at Leicester City in an injury disrupted spell.
“He took his opportunity and is now playing regularly in the Premier League at Manchester United.
“If I can make the most of my season at Wigan Athletic hopefully it will help me to achieve something similar.”
“The manager called me personally and told me how he’d love me to join to the club and offer me this opportunity.
“That was a big influence and I told him I would really like to come and prove myself to see if I can compete regularly in the Premier League.
“So it feels great to have joined. Everyone has welcomed me very well at the club and I’m delighted to be here.
“Wigan Athletic are a good team and are going in the right direction so hopefully I can help the club progress and offer something different.
“I spoke with Andre Villas-Boas as well and he said gaining experience of playing in the Premier League was important for me at this stage of my career and that it would help me develop a great deal for when I return to Chelsea.”
