Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has turned his attention to Chelsea’s Brazilian defender Alex to solve his side’s defensive problems.
Reds director of football Damien Comolli indicated on Friday that the £6million arrival of Jose Enrique from Newcastle United would be the club’s last inward transfer of the summer.
But Dalglish is eager to recruit a centre-back before the window shuts at the end of August and it seems owners Fenway Sports Group are prepared to find the money for a new defender after the injury sustained to Daniel Agger and the team’s shaky defensive performances during pre-season.
The Anfield club have held unofficial talks with the Blues over the proposed £12m move for Alex and negotiations are believed to be progressing smoothly.
The Reds have switched their attention to the Brazil international after admitting defeat in their attempts to prize away Ryan Shawcross from Stoke City, who refused to lower their £18million estimation of their skipper..
It is understood the Reds boss is aware he is running out of time to sign a central defender and will abandon his policy of buying youngsters to bolster his backline.
Dalglish became aware of Alex’s availability after learning of Arsenal’s and Juventus’s interest in the the 29-year-old.
