Liverpool are reportedly eyeing up two of the Bundesliga’s star defenders in attempt to shore up their back line.
Caughtoffside.com are claiming that Per Mertesacker is one of the names up for discussion at Anfield with the player having entered the last year of his contract at Werder Bremen. The Germany international has been tracked by Arsenal since his impressive displays at the 2010 World Cup and had a £10m bid rejected for him last summer. The Gunners are thought to still be interested in his signature but Liverpool have know thrown their hat into the ring and could lodge an £8m bid.
Meanwhile in The People, the Reds are supposedly also casting envious eyes over Borussia Dortmund’s Neven Subotic. The Serbia defender has also been monitored by Arsenal while Chelsea were said to be in negotiations over his purchase in January. Attempting to prise the player from a Champions League club to join who will have their midweek schedule largely empty could prove tricky though the ambition that the Merseysider’s have shown in the transfer market since Kenny Dalglish returned as manager could yet be enough to convince the 22-year-old to move to Anfield.
However, the transfer fee could prove a sticking point with the player valued at £18m despite the newspaper claiming it would take just £13m to buy the player.
