Liverpool are believed to be contending with Arsenal to sign Lazio striker Mauro Zarate.
The Serie A club are ready to listen to offers for their Argentine forward, having signed Djibril Cisse and Miroslav Klose earlier this summer.
However, their asking price of 20m Euros – approximately £17.4m – is putting off many of the clubs interested in the player.
Arsenal are understandably reluctant to pay that kind of money, while Liverpool have paid out big fees this summer.
Zarate’s ability either to lead the line or as a wide player could stand him in good stead at Anfield, with Kenny Dalglish short of options up front when Andy Carroll or Luis Suarez is unavailable.
Whether Liverpool will pay that kind of money for a striker who will likely be no more than backup remains to be seen.
