Liverpool are considering a late move for VfL Wolfsburg defender Marcel Schafer after his club manager Felix Magath stripped him of the captaincy.
The shock decision came after Wolfsburg lost a German Cup match to fourth tier team Leipzig last weekend, with Magath feeling that the only possible decision was his drastic response.
“[Schafer] did very well last season – otherwise we would not have stayed in the league – but after the performance in the cup I see myself forced to make changes within the team,” said Magath.
Left back Schafer is thought to be unimpressed with Magath’s decision, having led the team to the Bundesliga title as recently as 2009, and is considering his options.
A bid from Anfield of around £4m could test Wolfsburg’s resolve.
