Keith Thurman has insisted that he would love to take on IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook in what he believes would be the “best fight of the year”.

Brook will return to the ring to make the second defence of his title on May 30 against fellow Brit Frankie Gavin, after his touted bout with Amir Khan failed to materialise.
While promoter Eddie Hearn has since revealed that the winner of that bout will face Brandon Rios in August, Thurman wants to be added to the mix and take on the Sheffield-born fighter.
‘One Time’ holds the ‘regular’ WBA belt in the division and is fresh from his win over Robert Guerrero last month and will be looking for his next opponent in the coming months.
The welterweight division is tied up until May 2 as many of the fighters will be waiting for the outcome of Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquaio, but Thurman is confident that a meeting with Brook would be a better spectacle.
“That would be the best fight of the year. It would be a great fight. I think Kell’s a smart boxer. He’s got a real nice right hand, he’s got a good jab, and I think it would be a great fight,” he told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
“I don’t know much about him, Kell Brook has just been getting attraction from the American eyesight. I’ve been looking at him since he fought Shawn Porter, so it’s only been two fights since I’ve watched the guy, but I do think he’s a real solid contender and a solid champion.”
Brook (34-0, 23 KOs) and Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) are considered amongst the top fighters in the division behind Mayweather and Pacquiao, and a bout between the pair would certainly be intriguing as they both put unbeaten records on the line.
It remains to be seen if the fight can be made for later this year, as Thurman will be looking to return in either June or July while Brook is busy with other assignments in that same timeframe.
