UFC president Dana White made the announcement early on Wednesday morning (UK time) after he violated the athlete’s code of conduct policy.
“He’s very disappointed. He’s upset,” White told Fox Sports.
“He wanted to go down as one of the greats, or the greatest ever. He’s disappointed, but it is what it is. It was the decision we had to make.”
Jones was scheduled to face Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 next month, however he has now been replaced by third-ranked Daniel Cormier who will fight Johnson for the now-vacant title.
The news exploded onto social media, with various people in and around the UFC sharing their opinions on the topic.
