Gareth Barry has signed for Everton on a free transfer, following his release by Manchester City.
The former England international midfielder spent last season on loan at Goodison Park, after failing to impress new City manager Manuel Pellegrini.
After completing the final year in his City contract, the 33-year-old has now signed a three year deal with Everton to become their first summer signing.
Barry, who has been capped 53 times by England, joined City from Aston Villa in 2009 for £12 m. He made 175 appearances in all competitions, and was an integral part of their title winning team during the 2011-12 season, playing in 34 of his team’s 38 Premier League games.
The midfielder then made 37 appearances for Everton in all competitions last season, scoring three times as he became a key part of Roberto Martinez’s team.
Martinez will be desperate to make further additions this summer, as his team look to build on last season’s fifth place Premier League finish, and prepare for a run at the Europa League.
Their top priority will be a striker, following Romelu Lukaku’s return to Chelsea. However, they may still be hoping to turn a second loan move into a permanent one, following Diego Costa’s arrival at Stamford Bridge.
