Fernando Torres could be ruled out of Chelsea’s opening fixture of the Premier League season at Stoke on Sunday after suffering concussion in Spain’s freindly with Italy on Wednesday night.
The 27-year-old left the field after just 14 minutes in Bari and was taken to hospital as a precaution as his team fell to a 2-1 defeat to the Azzurri courtesy of an Alberto Aquilani winner.
Missing the game at the Britannia Stadium would be yet another setback in the Spaniard’s helsea career which has failed to ignite since his block-busting £50m transfer from Liverpool in January. The foremerly prolific hitman has managed just one goal in 18 competitve appearances for the Blues and only managed one goal in pre-season.
The forthcoming campaign as been labelled as ‘make or break’ by many observers and with compeitiom for places particularly tough for strikers at Stamford Bridge, the injury will be all the more frustrating for Torres.
