Real Madrid could be set to provide competition as Jose Mourinho tries to bring outstanding young Marseille midfielder Giannelli Imbula to Chelsea this summer, according to CaughtOffside.
The Spanish giants are joining the race for the highly-rated Frenchman, who has stood out as one of the finest defensive midfield players in Ligue 1 this season with some commanding displays for Marseille.
Chelsea seemingly want more options in that part of the pitch, with the likes of Ramires and John Obi Mikel not always convincing as backup options to Nemanja Matic as the team’s most defensive-minded midfield player.
However, Real are also keeping an eye on Imbula’s progress, with Carlo Ancelotti also arguably short of players in that position with attack-minded stars like Luka Modric and Toni Kroos both playing as his deepest-lying midfielders this season.
It remains to be seen if a player like Imbula could really become a regular for either side at this stage, with both teams tending to favour big names over handing youth a chance.
