Chelsea have reached an agreement with Valencia over the sale of Juan Mata.
The Spain international had been identified by Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas as being the solution to his team’s lack of inventiveness in the final third of the pitch and as a way of unlocking the boundless potential of £50m striker Fernando Torres. He has now been backed up by the club’s moneymen who have successfully negotiated with the indebted Spanish club.
“Valencia Football Club has reached an agreement in principle with Chelsea FC for the transfer of the player Juan Manuel Mata,” read a statement on Valencia’s official website.
“The agreement is subject to the relevant medical tests.”
The fee is believed to be around £23m and Chelsea hope to agree personal terms in time to unveil him alongside Romelu Lukaku and Oriol Romeu on Tuesday.
