Upon his initial arrival from Werder Bremen back in 2011 many thought the towering German was too slow and cumbersome to succeed in England.
Yet Mertesacker has adapted brilliantly and proven those doubters wrong with some top-class displays and is also the natural leader on the pitch.
In fact the 29-year-old’s improved form has seen club captain Thomas Vermaelen become something of a peripheral figure in north London.
