Arsenal are believed to be close to signing Birmingham City centre back Scott Dann after he was left out of the Blues’ squad for their UEFA Europa League tie against Nacional last night.
Birmingham manager Chris Hughton admitted that Dann was now recovered from his injury before the match.
“Scott is very much available,” confirmed Hughton.
However, afterwards he said that the form of Curtis Davies and Steven Caldwell meant Dann could not get in the team.
“[Dann] missed a few days’ training and then we decided he was not going to be risked for the following Saturday,” Hughton told the Birmingham Mail.
“The two other lads [Curtis Davies and Steven Caldwell] have done well for us and subsequently have stayed in the side.
“Scott has been left out of the set-up simply for that reason.”
That answers why Dann wasn’t in the starting XI, but doesn’t explain why he didn’t feature in the squad.
Unless it was to avoid being cup tied.
Is Arsene Wenger about to sign his second non-teenage player of the summer after Gervinho?
