Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is reportedly set to swoop for Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen in the January transfer window.
According to the Metro, Wenger believes his team’s defence is in need of urgent reinforcements having conceded 21 goals in their first ten Premier League matches this season.
Despite their upturn in form, which has seen them win eight of their last nine games in all competitions, including the thrilling 5-3 win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday against Chelsea, the French tactician is keen to fill the gaps in his backline.
Ajax centre-back Vertonghen is likely to cost around £10 million and could be set for a reunion with former team-mate Thomas Vermaelen who recently signed a new deal at the Emirates.
Arsenal have previously been linked with the Belgian international, and the player himself has admitted it would be a ‘dream’ to follow Vermaelen to north London.
Despite the arrival of the likes of Per Mertesacker and Andre Santos in the summer, it is believed that Wenger is keen to add further faces in order to reduce the startling number of goals conceded so far this campaign.
