Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta was rumoured to be headed out of the Emirates, but that will have to wait at least another year.
The Spanish international formerly played for Real Sociedad before transferring to Everton, whom he played with from 2005 to 2011.
Real Sociedad had been rumored to be a destination once again for the veteran midfielder.
However, the Gunners have given the 33-year-old midfielder a one-year contract extension, according to The Metro.
Arteta was not expected by many to return to the Gunners for the 2015-16 season, as his 2014-15 season was derailed by an ankle injury.
The midfielder was forced to undergo surgery, ruling him out for three months, so his future at the Emirates became doubtful.
The Gunners saw the emergence of 24-year-old midfielder Francis Coquelin, which further fueled speculation that Arteta may be on his way out.
Arsenal’s young players will look to receive all of the mentoring that they can from Arteta, who is likely entering his final year with the Gunners.
