Arsene Wenger shows string interest in signing Lorenzo Melgarejo from the Portuguese club
Arsenal are have made an official enquiry about Benfica left-back Lorenzo Melgarejo.
The Gunners already boast Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs at left full-back but are reportedly interested in adding the Paraguayan star to their ranks this summer.
The 22-year old is valued at £5m by the Europa League runners-up, and could be an interesting addition Arsenal, who look ready to spend big in the summer transfer market.
Battling Arsenal for the signature is Turkish club Fenerbache, who have also made an enquiry into the availability of the Melgarejo recently, but the player’s agent has said nothing concrete has been discussed thus far.
“Arsenal and Fenerbahce have enquired about Melgarejo. But so far there has been nothing concrete,” Juan Gabriel Appleyard told Sky Sports.
With chairman Ivan Gazidis telling Wenger he has £70m to spend this year, the Frenchman is going out of his way to target young talent that can contribute to the club in the long-term, as well as immediately.
