Chelsea have today confirmed that young central midfielder Oriol Romeu has signed a new three-year contract with the Blues, after he returned from a loan spell with La Liga club Valencia last season.
The 22 year-old played 70 minutes in the Blues’ 5-0 friendly victory at Wycombe Wanderers on Wednesday evening and spent last season on love with Valencia, with his impressive displays at the Mestalla clearly being enough to persuade the Chelsea hierarchy to extend his contract until 2017.
Romeu signed for the Blues in 2011 from Barcelona, where he made just one first team appearance, going on to play 22 Premier League games for the club before falling out of favour somewhat and being allowed to return to La Liga last season.
He is still seen as a fine young player by the club, however, and is likely to stay at Stamford Bridge this season to battle for his place in the defensive midfield role with Nemanja Matic and John Obi Mikel.
Chelsea are perhaps keen not to see a repeat of the situation with Matic, who was allowed to leave Stamford Bridge on the cheap despite impressive as a youngster, only to be re-signed from Benfica by Jose Mourinho for a significant fee.
