FT: West Ham United 3-3 Arsenal
Arsenal survived a barrage of West Ham pressure to leave Upton Park with their unbeaten Premier League run – now four games – intact.
But their failure to pick up all three points surely signals the end of their title bid, with leaders Leicester City 10 points ahead with six games remaining.
The Gunners led 2-0 thanks to first-half goals from Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, before Andy Carroll bullied weak defenders to net a hat-trick and turn the game in West Ham’s favour, only for Laurent Koscielny – one of Carroll’s main victims – to salvage a draw with 20 minutes remaining.
All three of Carroll’s goals – including the thumping header below that made it 3-2 – came from crosses as Arsenal’s aerial failings were exposed.
It was not just in the sky where the Gunners struggled to contain Carroll.
With the score at 3-2, Koscielny was lucky to be awarded a free-kick after losing a battle of strength with Carroll, which resulted in the Hammers no.9 dispossessing the French defender and passing to Dimitri Payet, who saw his goal disallowed.
That was West Ham’s second disallowed goal of the game, after Manuel Lanzini had wrongly seen an effort ruled out for offside at 0-0.
