Arsenal have been strongly linked with both Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke and Karim Benzema of Real Madrid but it’s Getafe striker Ciprian Marica that the club want to sign, reports the Daily Mail.
Manager Arsene Wenger has recognised that a lack of striking options could be where the club fall down this season and is looking to make a new signing in January.
However, despite spending an uncharacteristically high £42.4m on Mesut Ozil in the summer, the Frenchman is still cautious about how much new players should cost.
With both Benteke and Benzema certain to set the Gunners back upwards of £25m each, Wenger has decided that a cheaper and therefore safer option is more favourable.
This is why the 64-year-old has turned to former Schalke 04 forward Marica – who was linked with both the north London club and their local rivals Tottenham Hotspur this summer, before making the move to Spain.
Yet Wenger hasn’t forgotten about the Romania international, who has netted just the one La Liga goal since signing for Getafe.
This reversion back to the cautious transfer dealings of old will do little to convince the faithful at the Emirates Stadium that the Frenchman’s side can seriously challenge for the Premier League title this term.
Although Wenger has a reputation for turning cheap unknown youngsters in world-class stars, at 28-years-old Marica is far from a youthful player.
The forward also has a questionable scoring record for an attacker in the No.9 role, with 83 goals in 348 matches for club and country.
If Wenger really wants a backup for Olivier Giroud with genuine quality, expensive signings such as Benteke and Benzema are going to be more successful that Marica.
