Any doubts Gunners fans had seem to have rescinded.
What a difference two weeks make for a Premier League club, as Arsenal go from a team in crisis to potential title contenders in 15 days by signing Real Madrid’s Mesut Ozil.
Gunners supporters were bemoaning the fact that the club had not spent any money on new players and in fact had never spent a large amount on talent since Arsene Wenger took charge in 1996.
With only Yaya Sanogo as a new acquisition going into the first game of the season – a free transfer from Auxerre – things went from bad to worse when Aston Villa humbled Wenger’s men with a 1-3 victory at the Emirates Stadium.
The fans started to turn on the Frenchman and talk emerged that not only did the 63-year-old not have a grasp on the team anymore, but there would be no more silverware in north London for some time.
Yet as deadline day unfolded rumours began that the club were in for Madrid ace Ozil – a marquee signing that would not only signal the team’s intent, but also severely strengthen the side.
When the £42.4m switch was completed it left many gobsmacked and showed that Wenger was not in fact the blinkered manager living in the past, but a shrewd operator who had bagged the player with the most assists in Europe from the last five years.
This was coupled with the fact that since the Villa loss Arsenal have kept a 100% record, that saw the side qualify for a 17th consecutive Champions League competition, beat rivals Tottenham Hotspur and climb to fourth in the table.
