Luton Town produced one of the great FA Cupsets on Saturday, winning 1-0 at Norwich City to become the first non-league team to eliminate a top-flight side in the Premier League era. Hereford United 2-1 Newcastle United (1972)
Arguably the most evocative of all FA Cup upsets, this third-round replay took place on a mud-covered bog of a pitch and followed a 2-2 draw between the sides at St James’ Park.
Newcastle took an 82nd-minute lead through England striker Malcolm McDonald but Ronnie Radford equalised with a 30-yard thunderbolt three minutes later to spark a mass pitch invasion.
Ricky George scored the winner in extra time, prompting the home fans to pour onto the pitch again and cementing the club’s place in cup folklore.
