Bulls trounce Knicks: (Video) Impressive opener from Chicago in 24-point win.
The Cleveland Cavaliers bounced back from their disappointing opening night loss to secure a road win over rivals the Chicago Bulls on Friday.
LeBron James scored 36 points but it took a late surge from the visitors to force overtime as the Bulls had looked in control after some inspired play by Kirk Hinrich.
Kevin Love (16 points, 16 rebounds) and Kyrie Irving (23 points) tied the scores up before Love missed an opportunity to win the game in regulation, but James stepped up in OT to ensure that his team-mate wasn’t made to regret his miss.
Meanwhile, Derrick Rose scored 20 points for Chicago but his game was ended prematurely as he was forced to the locker room with a sprained ankle and failed to play down the stretch which inevitably hurt the Bulls.
Nevertheless, Tristan Thompson made a significant difference after grabbing 13 rebounds, many of them offensive which allowed for a glut of second-chance points, and the Cavs were able to strike the first blow in a rivalry which many believe will see flourish in the Eastern Conference finals later in the season.
Elsewhere, the Los Angeles Clippers held off a spirited Lakers charge to pick up the first victory between the two LA rivals. Blake Griffin scored 39 points to help the Clips keep their co-tenants at bay, and although they now slip to 0-3 for the season, the Lakers will take some comfort from their performance.
The Sacramento Kings inflicted a first defeat of the season on the Portland Trail Blazers with Rudy Gay scoring 40 points to move the Kings to 1-1, while the Phoenix Suns pulled off a shock thanks to a late surge from Isaiah Thomas who finished the game with 23 points.
Tony Parker scored 19 points for the visitors, but it wasn’t enough for the defending champions to avoid their first loss of the season.
