Caleb Moore suffered a horrific crash on the opening day of the X Games Aspen 2013.
Shaun White, the two-time Olympic gold-medal winner with 22 X Games medals, competed in both snowboard eliminations, but struggled to land his jumps cleanly.
He landed a switch backside 1080 on his first jump, but he hand-touched on two of his landings finishing seventh with a score of 67.33.
The first medal event of X Games Aspen 2013 capped off the opening day’s action, the Snowmobile Freestyle final.
During the first run of the night, last year’s bronze medalist, Caleb Moore, under-rotated an indy air backflip. The tips of his sled skis gouged the snow, pitching Moore face-first as his 450-pound snowmobile came crashing down on top of him. The 25-year-old Texan laid motionless for several minutes before regaining consciousness.
Later in the round, perhaps a bit rattled by his big brother’s bad fall, Colten Moore over-rotated on the same jump and was taken off the course on a gurney.
The contest continued and Levi LaVallee launched solid combinations — including a huge kiss-of-death flip — and raced through the turns on his final 75-second run to seize gold. He earned a score of 89.00, three-tenths of a point better than silver medalist Joe Parsons.
