Dominant victory for the champion ends months of talk from the challenger.
It was a fight that had been hyped for months and was billed as one of the biggest of the year for the UFC.
But when it got down to business, Jon Jones lived up to the pre-fight expectations and dominated Chael Sonnen to get the first round stoppage at UFC 159.
The win for Jones (18-1 MMA, 12-1 UFC) sees him tie the record for most light heavyweight title defences with Tito Ortiz at five.
For Sonnen (27-13-1 MMA, 6-6) his future remains up in the air, with the challenger hinting at retirement at the press conference if he is not considered to be a title contender.
Right out of the gate in the main event, Jones looked to take on Sonnen at his own game, ground and pound.
Three times in the first round Sonnen was taken down and from there, Jones dominated from top position and threw several nasty elbows that left Sonnen’s face badly damaged when the fight was stopped 27 seconds before the bell.
